A pool in Westchester is a 12-week pool without a heater and a 24-week pool with one. The difference is enormous: late May through mid-October versus a few good weekends in July and August. If you're going to invest in a pool, the heater is what makes it worth using.
But the choice between gas, electric heat pump, and solar isn't obvious, and the answer depends on your fuel costs, swim habits, and how often you want the pool ready on short notice.
Option 1 — Natural gas or propane heater
The fastest option. A 400,000 BTU natural gas heater raises a typical 20,000-gallon Westchester pool 1°F every 15–20 minutes. From 60°F to 82°F in roughly 8 hours of run time.

A heat pump pulls warmth from outside air and transfers it to the pool. Much more efficient than gas — 5–6x more BTUs per dollar — but it's slow and only works when air temperature is above ~50°F.

Best for: owners who keep the pool at a steady temperature all season. A heat pump on a programmable timer running 8 hours a day is the cheapest way to maintain 82°F from May to September. Bad fit if you only want to heat the pool occasionally — the slow ramp-up will frustrate you.
Option 3 — Solar heater
Solar mats or panels on the roof or ground absorb heat and transfer it to pool water through a bypass loop. Free fuel, but limited capacity and tied to weather.

- Run cost: essentially zero (just the pump runs longer)
- Heat-up time: depends entirely on sun
Best for: south-facing roofs with strong all-day sun, owners with flexible swim schedules, and homes where panels can be hidden visually. In Westchester, solar adds about 10–12°F to a pool during peak summer — enough to extend the season into June and through September, but rarely enough to heat a pool to 82°F in May or October.

Hybrid: heat pump + cover

Rule of thumb for Westchester:

Under-sized heaters never reach target temperature on cold-snap days, run constantly, and burn out years early. Over-sized heaters cost more upfront but actually run cheaper because they heat fast and shut off — short bursts, not constant operation.

Maintenance and lifespan
All three heater types are sensitive to water chemistry. Low pH eats the heat exchanger; high pH scales it. The biggest single thing you can do to extend heater life is keep pH between 7.4 and 7.6 year-round. Annual heater inspections — checking for soot in gas units, refrigerant in heat pumps, leaks in solar panels — catch problems before they become replacements.
