Run a pool pump long enough to turn the water over once per day — usually 8–12 hours for a Westchester in-ground pool. Variable-speed pumps should run 10–14 hours at low speed instead of 6–8 hours at high speed. Longer, slower run cycles filter better and use 60–70% less electricity.
The turnover rule
The number that matters is turnover: how long it takes to move a volume of water equal to your entire pool through the filter. The industry standard is one turnover per day; two is better if you have heavy swimmer load or lots of tree cover. For a 20,000-gallon pool with a 40-gallon-per-minute pump, one turnover takes 8.3 hours.
Divide your pool volume by your pump's actual flow rate (in GPM × 60). Add 20% for realistic run time, since flow drops as the filter loads. That's your minimum. For most Westchester in-ground pools it lands between 8 and 12 hours per day.
Variable-speed pumps changed the math
Since 2021, New York state code requires variable-speed pumps on almost all new pool installations. VS pumps are dramatically more efficient — a low-speed cycle uses roughly one-quarter the electricity of a single-speed pump at the same effective turnover. The catch is that low speed moves less water, so you have to run longer.
The right pattern for a variable-speed pump: 10–14 hours at low speed (1,200–1,800 RPM), plus a 1–2 hour high-speed burst in the morning to skim and vacuum. That combination filters more thoroughly than an 8-hour single-speed cycle at full power, and it costs 60–70% less to run.
What running too little looks like
- Cloudy water that doesn't fully clear even with balanced chemistry.
- Debris settles overnight and stays on the floor.
- Chlorine feels "weak" — algae keeps trying to start on the walls.
- Warm-side circulation dead zones (usually corners or steps).
Every one of those symptoms disappears with a longer run cycle. Before adding chemicals or calling a technician, check that the pump is actually running the hours you think it is.
Electricity cost in Westchester
Con Edison and NYSEG rates in Westchester run around $0.22–$0.28 per kWh (2025). A single-speed 1.5 HP pump draws roughly 1.8 kW. Running 8 hours a day for a 5-month season, that's about $260–$340 per season.
A variable-speed pump at low speed draws 200–400 W. Running 14 hours a day for the same 5 months costs roughly $65–$120 per season. Payback on the upgrade is typically 2–3 seasons — one of the highest-ROI pool improvements you can make.
When to run — day or night?
Run the pump primarily during daylight. That's when UV is depleting chlorine, when swimmers introduce organic load, and when solar heat and algae growth are highest. Circulation is most valuable when the pool is being stressed.
A nighttime-only schedule (cheaper off-peak power) sounds good but leaves the pool without chemistry distribution through the entire pollen-and-heat cycle. If you must split, do 8 hours during daylight and 4 hours overnight.
Signs your pump needs service, not more hours
If running the pump longer doesn't fix cloudy water, the pump itself may be under-performing:
- Loud whining or grinding — worn bearings.
- Air bubbles at the return jets — a suction-side leak.
- Filter pressure that won't climb even when dirty — impeller clog.
- Motor hot to the touch after 30 minutes — capacitor failing.
These are the calls we take at midsummer. A pump that's on its way out costs more in electricity and less in filtration until it fails outright. If yours is over 8 years old and showing any of the above, plan the replacement now rather than in an emergency in August.
The bottom line
One turnover per day. Longer and slower on a variable-speed pump. Run during daylight. Adjust upward when you have heavy debris, a pool party, or a heat wave. If a longer schedule doesn't visibly improve water quality within a week, the problem isn't the schedule — it's the pump or the filter, and it's time for a service call.
